Prague, Czech Republic
June 25, 2025
There is a quirkiness to Prague that is appealing. It takes a while to feel it, but it is there indubitably. It is in the shape of the Dancing House – a piece of architecture that I have seen nowhere else. It is in the giant butterflies that spread and close their wings on a building. It is in the impromptu concert next door to the hostel I stayed in. A pair of musicians played, one of them on what looked like a split tree branch! He had small sticks and it looked like he was using the branches as drums!
The icing on the cake was meeting Bart again. We had met in Uganda last summer, at the one-horse town of Kisoro at the border with Rwanda. Despite not traveling together, we ran into each other in one place or another over the next three weeks. We stayed in touch and planned to meet up in Prague.
We were to meet in Bart’s favorite pub, a house that shows indie films. Walking there I witnessed yet another facet of Prague’s quirkiness. A race or run in their swimwear. Maybe they are heading to the river or a lake or maybe a fountain where they can jump in? Who knows?
There is a map inside that shows all the other indie film venues in Czech Republic. My respect for the populace and especially their taste jumped up by several notches. Bart’s friends are all students just like him but in different disciplines. And they have minds that think along original grooves, rather than the run-of-the-mill. What a delight it was to meet them and spend the evening chatting!
