An aerial cablecar swings over two gorges between the town of Halidzor and Tatev in south-eastern Armenia, its destination, the Tatev monastery. Down below is the zigzag ribbon of the road down one slope and up the next, across the Devil’s bridge that spans the narrow chasm.
Built in the 9th century, this is one of the most famous of Armenia’s many monasteries. The site, atop a basalt plateau is certainly one of the most dramatic. In its heyday it was vibrant center of learning, boasting a multitude of scholars.
The monastery, like most others was a thriving place of business as well. The enormous old oil press is testament to the days when its coffers were filled from the sale of oil.
