As Fresh as it Gets

Zadar, Croatia

As it is to be expected in a place overpopulated with tourists, the stores run the gamut between the usual kitsch to the usual mass-produced apparel to bags to handcrafted items like lace and crocheted tablecloths.

More interesting was the open air market for fruits and vegetables. Apparently it is open year round and the produce come from farms. Tasty certainly and tempting but who knew there were cabbages that are conical? Locals and tourists share the customer base it seems but where do they buy dry goods like flour or rice or beans? “From the grocery shop” was the answer I got. This is only for fruits and vegetables with the odd nut stall.

Following my nose I happened upon the fish market in a large warehouse-like building. Brought in fresh from the sea each day, there were trays of fish large and small, squid and prawns. I have no idea what the fish were, but some of them looked downright ugly. I hoped they tasted better than they looked!

The proof of the pudding as saying goes… Yup, definitely up there in freshness and taste!
