Walvis Bay
June 7, 2024
On the Atlantic shore, this town tries hard to portray the image of the adrenaline capital of Namibia. With paragliding and sailing and catamarans on offer, it certainly sounded interesting. In reality, it is an industrial town with a huge factory for harvesting seasalt albeit with a pretty coastline. The active docks and railway for freight transport belie the tourist mecca image it tries hard to attain.
The bay certainly has flamingos and they look pretty against the blue of the bay. Cafes and restaurants line the shore amid the usual clutter of souvenir shops. Seagulls squawk and swoop along the shoreline. There are pelicans on the water, on the shallow sandbanks and strolling on the boulevard. They make the seagulls look tiny!
A sleek black head popping out of the water has us look again. Seals! The boatmen taking tourists for a token cruise around the bay have them trained well. Fish tossed overboard has them not only coming close but clambering on for photo ops.
Some tourists look on and take photos but some seem taken unawares. Ha! We have a ringside seat for performing seals minus a circus.
The flamingoes are beautifull. That is one animal I’ve yet to see in real life and would love to, especially in such a stunning backdrop!

Don’t forget Lake Natron or the Ngorongoro crater. Flamingos on the wing is a sight that is indescribable.
