Khorog

I have been dithering about going to Afghanistan all along this trip. Talking to other travelers, some days I am convinced that I should go and other days I think it is not the best idea. Most uncharacteristic of me, but now that I am in Khorog, I have decided to go. Getting a visa was simple but the consulate General repeatedly advised me not to go alone. Get someone else to go with you, he told me, preferably a man.
So here I am, looking for a man. For the past couple of days I’ve been doing the rounds of guesthouses, tourist information and travel agencies. And asking every traveler I meet. They in turn have been very helpful in spreading the word. The word is out – there is a woman in Pamir Lodge in Khorog who needs a man.

My dubious fame notwithstanding, I have found nobody. I am just going to go. I may need to buy a burkha and maybe get a donkey. Methinks “Burkha and a Backpack” will be the next chapter in this blog.

How quickly things can come together just when you’ve given up! Last night some travelers came in and voila! There was a man who wants to go to Afghanistan. Not only that, while getting his visa at the Afghan consulate, he met a couple of others who also want to go. So we are set. We leave early tomorrow, cross the border and go to the Wakhan.
